Frequently Asked Questions

Anesthesia

Can I discuss anesthesia and pain control with a veterinarian?

Yes, of course. At Health Vet, we believe it is essential that every pet owner is well informed. Our veterinarians are at your disposal to discuss in detail the anesthesia options, the safety measures applied during the procedures and the methods of post-operative pain control. Our goal is to ensure the comfort and safety of your companion at every stage of treatment.

Will my pet have pain after waking up from anesthesia?

For us, pain control is a priority. Depending on the type of intervention, the veterinarian will establish an individualized pain management protocol, both during the intervention and in the post-operative period. Our goal is to make waking up from anesthesia as comfortable as possible, and most patients receive effective painkillers to prevent and control pain. If you have any questions or concerns, our team is always available to provide you with all the necessary information.

Why is it necessary to keep the animal on a diet before anesthesia?

Food restriction before anesthesia is essential for the safety of your animal. During anesthesia, natural reflexes, including the swallowing reflex, are reduced or absent. If the stomach is full, there is a risk that food will be regurgitated and sucked into the lungs, which can lead to serious respiratory complications. Therefore, it is generally recommended that animals not be fed 8—12 hours before the procedure. We will give you clear instructions depending on the species, age and general health of your companion.

Cardiology

What is echocardiography?

Echocardiography is a non-invasive imaging procedure that uses ultrasound to examine the structure and function of the heart. This investigation allows the veterinarian to visualize in real time the dimensions of the heart chambers, the movement of the valves, the thickness of the walls and the blood flow. It is essential in diagnosing heart disease in pets and helps establish an appropriate treatment plan.

I have been told that my cat has a heart murmur. What does this mean and can it be treated?

A heart murmur is an abnormal sound detected during listening to the heart with the stethoscope and occurs when blood flow through the heart becomes turbulent.

To determine the exact cause and severity, it is recommended to perform an echocardiography (ultrasound of the heart), which provides detailed information about the size, functioning and structure of the heart. Depending on the diagnosis, periodic monitoring or initiation of drug treatment may be recommended.

At Health Vet, our team is experienced in assessing heart conditions and can provide you with a personalized care plan tailored to your companion's needs.

My dog is about to undergo an ultrasound. Is it a painful procedure?

No, ultrasound is not a painful procedure. It is a non-invasive imaging investigation, which is carried out with the help of ultrasound and allows the evaluation of internal organs in real time. The dog will be placed in a comfortable position, and most patients tolerate the procedure very well.

Imaging Diagnostics

What role does imaging diagnosis play in establishing a veterinary treatment plan?

Imaging diagnostics, by methods such as radiography, ultrasound or soon computed tomography (CT), provides essential information about the internal state of the animal's organism. These investigations allow the rapid and accurate identification of some conditions that cannot be detected by regular clinical examination, decisively contributing to the establishment of a correct and personalized therapeutic plan. At Health Vet, we use state-of-the-art equipment to ensure a complete and safe diagnosis.

If I have recent x-rays taken in another clinic, is it still necessary to repeat the investigation?

Previously done X-rays can be useful to understand the evolution of a condition, however, in some cases, the veterinarian may recommend repeating the investigation. This may be due to several factors: the quality of the images, the lack of projections relevant for the diagnosis, or the need to assess the current condition of the animal. The decision is always made in the interests of the patient and is aimed at establishing the most accurate treatment plan.

General

What do I need to do before coming to Health Vet?

Before visiting Health Vet, we recommend that you:

  • Schedule a consultationby phone or online to avoid waiting times.
  • Prepare medical historyof the companion, including any previous tests, treatments or interventions.
  • Write down the symptoms observed, even if they seem minor, to help us in establishing a complete diagnosis.
  • Observe the instructions received at the appointment, such as fasting in the case of investigations or interventions.
What options do I have after the death of my pet — can I choose between body retrieval, cremation or cremation?

In such difficult moments, we understand the pain of losing a dear companion. After the death of the animal, we offer owners several options: you can choose to take the body home for burial (if local law allows), or opt for cremation — individual or collective — through a specialist firm. Our team will provide you with the necessary support and information to make the right decision based on your wishes and values.

Neurology/Neurosurgery

After my dog has had spinal surgery, will he need physiotherapy?

Yes, in most cases, physiotherapy is recommended after surgery on the spine. This significantly contributes to functional recovery, reducing pain and regaining mobility. Through specific exercises, laser therapy, massage or hydrotherapy, physiotherapy helps to tone muscles, improve coordination and prevent post-operative complications. Your veterinarian will recommend a personalized recovery plan depending on the type of intervention and the general condition of the animal.

Can dogs get meningitis?

Yes, dogs can develop meningitis, although it is a relatively rare condition. Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord (meninges) and can have infectious (bacteria, viruses, parasites) or non-infectious (autoimmune) causes. Symptoms may include fever, neck stiffness, sensitivity to touch, changes in behavior or seizures.

The diagnosis is made through investigations such as blood tests, imaging and lumbar puncture. Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory therapies. If you notice neurological symptoms or behavioral changes in your dog, it is essential that you consult a veterinarian as soon as possible.

What types of operations does a veterinary neurosurgeon perform?

A veterinary neurosurgeon specializes in diagnosing and surgically treating disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system in animals. Amongst the most common interventions are:

  • herniated disc (especially in dogs of small and medium size),
  • vertebral fractures,
  • stabilisation of the spine,
  • removal of brain or spinal tumors,
  • correction of congenital abnormalities (eg: spina bifida).

These interventions require advanced equipment and an experienced medical team, and the operative decision is made following imaging investigations, such as MRI or CT.

Ophthalmology

What are the signs that my pet has an eye problem?

Changes in the eyes may include redness, excessive lacrimation, frequent blinking, opacity of the lens, abnormal secretions, sensitivity to light, or a tendency to rub against the eyes. If you notice any of these symptoms, an ophthalmologist's consultation is recommended for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

How serious can eye diseases be in animals?

Untreated eye conditions can progress rapidly and lead to severe complications, including vision loss. Early diagnosis is essential. Many conditions can be successfully managed if detected in time, so we recommend periodic evaluations, especially for breeds prone to eye problems.

Can eye diseases be treated without surgery?

Depending on the type and stage of the condition, some ophthalmic problems can be treated with local or systemic medication. Other times, surgery is necessary to preserve vision or prevent complications. The veterinary ophthalmologist will determine the most appropriate therapeutic approach for each individual case.

Orthopedics

My pet was recommended a TPLO procedure. What does that mean?

TPLO is an orthopedic surgery used to treat cranial cruciate ligament rupture, a common condition in dogs. The procedure involves changing the angle of the tibial plateau to stabilize the knee joint while walking. It is considered an advanced method with excellent recovery rates and resumption of normal activity.

Is TPLO the best surgery for cranial cruciate ligament problems?

TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) is one of the most effective and recommended surgeries to treat cranial cruciate ligament rupture in dogs, especially in medium and large breeds. This procedure alters the biomechanics of the knee joint, providing stability without depending on the ligament. Each case is unique, so the decision is made after a detailed orthopedic assessment.

Can hip dysplasia be treated with surgery?

Yes, hip dysplasia can be treated surgically, especially in moderate or severe cases that do not respond to conservative treatment. Surgical options vary depending on the age of the animal, the degree of dysplasia and the level of discomfort. Among the methods used are double or triple pelvic osteotomy, femoral head excision or total hip prosthesis. The orthopedic veterinarian will recommend the most appropriate option according to the clinical evaluation and imaging.
